Where to shop for groceries?

It was over lunch, Sally and I discussed and complained about the rising cost of living as a result of fuel price increase recently. It just stroke our mind that we should set up a community website that shares information related to tips on saving money and spending wisely! So we have decided to jointly collect data pertaining to prices of grocery items from super and hypermarkets since grocery items formed almost 50% of our household expenses.

To start up with this, we have started our searches on 4 super and hypermarkets ie Econsave, Jusco, Giant and Mydin. We also compiled price list for Carrefour and Tesco based on advertisement in the paper that they have put up. Items we have selected are those common brands that are consumed by most household. It is basically to provide us some forms of price index to gauge these hypermarkets.

You may refer to table below for prices of various items. Based on our analysis, we thought Econsave & Mydin both offer the best value for this week from 20/6/2008 till 22/6/2008.

We will continue to identify 'winner' that will give you some ideas as to which super/ hypermarket provides consistent best value for the consumer. We hope you will like it! Please check out our blog regularly for latest update. We also welcome feedbacks or sharing of prices you may get from these hypermarkets.

It's amazing to see the difference of prices and I have seen my fair share of it when I shop. Most of us shop where there's a 'sale'.
